Melanostatin DM (His-D-Arg-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys) is a synthetic variant of the naturally occurring melanostatin, which serves as an α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Melanocyte stimulating hormones are the primary hormones responsible for the melanin pigment production control.
For the time being, Melanostatin DM was only used as a part of animal in vitro studies, where the goal was to see how much it influenced melanin production. The results of these studies showed Melanostatin DM being able to lighten the skin tone and even out the skin coloration problems; leading researchers to believe this synthetic compound might have a potential application in dealing with photodamage (skin pigmentation issues due to exposure to the sun).
Naturally occurring Melanostatin is also capable of blocking the effects of opioid receptors, inhibiting the release of neuropeptides and activating dopamine receptors. Unfortunately, animal studies showed Melanostatin DM only affected α-melanocyte stimulating hormone, while having no effect on opioid or dopamine receptors.
